Adam Estacio – :
Brilliant way to see the real Vietnam
We booked a moped to go from Hue to Hoi An over the Hai Van pass having never ridden a moped before! We did a lot of research before going to make sure we were covered by UK driving license and insurance. For both of us, as long as the moped was 125cc or lower then it was fine for both.
We had asked for Motorvina to meet us at the train station as we were arriving on an overnight train from Hanoi but when we arrived there weren’t there. A quick WhatsApp message to them using the free station Wi-fi and they apologised for being late and it would be quickest if we got in a taxi to their offices. Motorvina paid for the taxi.
After a couple of goes up and down the street we were off! Hue is on the quiet side with regards to traffic so it’s a good learning ground, just take time at junctions and use your horn like a local 😁
The ride to get to the pass is fairly long but it gives you time to get used to the roads. The lady at Motorvina had put the directions and some places to stop in my phone on google maps which was really helpful. That is until you accidentally exit the app and have no Wi-fi to reload it! A friendly man in his cafe at the side of the road allowed us to use his Wi-fi though so we were back on track.
The pass starts with a constant incline which a 125cc copes with no problems, even with two people on it. There are some tight hairpins which you need to look out for trucks on as they tend to completely cut the corner. There are a few places to stop on the way up, just make sure it’s on a corner and you’re tucked right in.
At the top there is a viewing area and then it’s downhill to the bottom. We made a stop shortly after the end of the pass for 30,000 dong of fuel. We only needed another 10,000 probably to get to Hoi an but we wanted to be safe. We had started with a full tank.
We arrived at the Hoi An Motorvina office and our bags were there ready for us to get a taxi to our hotel. It took us about 5 hours.
All the staff were friendly and there were no problems with the bike at all. A thoroughly enjoyable day seeing Vietnam in a totally different way.
